Verstappen backs Red Bull’s decision to extend Perez’s contract

Max Verstappen believes that Sergio Perez’s contract extension with Red Bull was an important decision.

Perez joined Red Bull in 2021 after leaving Racing Point and his impressive performances have seen Red Bull renew his contract until the end of 2024.

Reigning champion Verstappen has spoken about the positive relationship he has with Perez (Checo) and the benefit it brings to the team.

Speaking to RacingNews365.com, Verstappen said: “I think it was a logical choice to give Checo a new contract. It’s important that both cars score a good amount of points and that’s what we are doing at the moment.”

“It’s very nice to work with him. We have fun on and off the track and that’s also very important for the team.”

Red Bull had been looking for a driver who could compete at a similar level to Verstappen and deliver consistent results after Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon failed to do so. Perez has continued to improve during his time at Red Bull and the team rewarded him for his efforts.

The Mexican driver has won twice with the team including this season’s Monaco Grand Prix. He also took his maiden pole position at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. He currently sits third in the championship, behind Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
