Suzuki set to quit MotoGP

Suzuki have officially confirmed that they intend to leave MotoGP at the end of the 2022 season.

They have been in discussions with promoters Dorna Sports about ending their deal, which has all current manufacturers locked into a contract until 2026.

Suzuki have cited that the current economic climate has led them to re-evaluate their entry in MotoGP and had forced them to quit.

News had surfaced last week that they were looking to leave MotoGP after Suzuki’s management made the race team aware of their intentions. However no official announcement was forthcoming as negotiations with Dorna needed to take place first.

The Japanese manufacturer only returned to the sport in 2015 after previously leaving in 2011. They won their first rider’s championship in 20 years when they clinched the title with Joan Mir in 2020.

They have made a strong start to the 2022 season with Alex Rins sitting fourth in the standings and team-mate Mir in sixth. Both riders now face an uncertain future following Suzuki’s announcement.
