Andrea Dovizioso set to leave MotoGP at the end of the 2022 season

Andrea Dovizioso has confirmed that he is not planning to race in MotoGP beyond 2022.

The Italian rider is in his 15th season in the MotoGP class and is currently with the Yamaha RNF Racing team. However, he has struggled for form in 2022 and has only made it into the points on four occasions, leaving him 22nd in the standings.

Speaking to MotoGP.com about his future in the championship beyond 2022, Dovizioso said: “For sure, I will not race. I always said if I would not be competitive, I don’t want to be here. So, there is no reason. Especially after 20 years. I never tried to have a place for next year.”

He has not confirmed what his plans will be for 2023, and it is unclear whether Dovizioso is going to retire from motorcycle racing altogether.

During his MotoGP career, Dovizioso has competed in 245 races, taking 15 wins and 62 podiums. He has been runner-up in the championship on three separate occasions – in 2017, 2018 and 2019 – finishing behind Marc Marquez each time.

The 36-year-old previously left the championship at the end of 2020 after a dispute with Ducati but returned to race with his current team towards the end of 2021.
