Castroneves looking to make history at the Indy 500

Will Castroneves make Indy 500 history?

Brazilian driver Helio Castroneves is looking to become the first five-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 when it takes place later this month. He is also hoping to become the first driver to achieve back-to-back race wins on more than one occasion, after taking home the trophy in 2021.

Breaking the records would be made even sweeter by a rolling jackpot that currently stands at $400,000.

Since 1995, BorgWarner Inc. has offered a prize pot that increases yearly by $20,000. This is then awarded to any driver that manages to win the race for two consecutive years.

Castroneves is the only driver to take home the winnings when he completed the double in 2001 and 2002. At that time, he won $160,000. The funds were then reset to zero and have been building ever since. Only five drivers have ever achieved back-to-back wins in the race’s history.

The 47-year-old will be making his 22nd appearance in the famous race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He is one of only four drivers to have won the race four times along with A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears.

The Indy 500 is due to take place on Sunday 29 May.
