Colton Herta wants to race in F1 after completing McLaren test

Current IndyCar driver Colton Herta has set his sights on a seat in Formula 1 after completing a test session for McLaren.

The American drove McLaren’s 2021 race car at Portimão in Portugal as part of the team’s young driver evaluation programme.

After the test, the 22-year-old spoke about his ambitions to compete in F1 and believes he has the pace to compete.

“It’s a goal of mine and has been for a while,” he said. “I do think I’m fast enough. Whether they agree or not, I guess time will tell.”

Herta made his debut in IndyCar in 2018 and became the youngest race winner in IndyCar when he won at the Circuit of the Americas in 2019. He has since gone on to secure seven wins in the series.

Current McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo has been under pressure having failed to earn the results that the team would be expecting. This has led to increased speculation that Ricciardo could be replaced.

McLaren have been building a strong roster of young drivers in recent times as they will have teams competing in F1, IndyCar, Formula E, and Extreme E from next season. Along with Herta, the team also have a contract with Mexican Pato O’Ward and have recently announced the signing of reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou.
