Lewis Hamilton has warned his Mercedes team that they face a strong challenge from Red Bull at this afternoon’s Belgian Grand Prix.

Hamilton and team-mate Nico Rosberg were top of the timesheets on both practice sessions at Spa on Friday, despite the German suffering a high-speed spin during the afternoon action.

However, with Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat finishing in third and fourth places in P2, reigning world champion Hamilton is wary of a major challenge from Red Bull over the weekend.

The Englishman, edged out by Rosberg in both sessions, told BBC Sport: “Red Bull are looking closer this weekend than they have for a while, so it should be close.”

Ricciardo was pleased with the progress shown by his team, but still expects to need a bit of extra help to challenge Mercedes.

He added: “It’s going to be closer tomorrow, but to win I think we’d need a helping hand again.

“A podium would be nice. Let’s see how it goes tomorrow, I think we’ll close up a lot more.

“It’s nice when you see it’s close. You put the perfect lap together and you know one tenth can move you up two or three positions. It’s fun.”
