New Brazilian Formula 4 championship gets underway

The inaugural Brazilian Formula 4 season got underway at the weekend with three races held at the Autódromo Velo Città in Mogi Guaçu, São Paulo.

Brazil has had a rich heritage of producing racing talent, with drivers competing in the world’s biggest championships. However, any young racer would often need to travel to Europe, USA, or Asia to launch their career in a feeder series.

Brazilian F4, which is FIA certified, will aim to give the next generation of South American racers a dedicated single-seater championship to compete in that is closer to home.

The first round saw 15 drivers take to the circuit, competing for four different teams. Amongst those taking part is Fernando Barrichello, son of former F1 race winner Rubens.

Pedro Clerot won two of the three races with Ricardo Gracia taking victory in the other race. At 15, Clerot looks like a driver with a bright future and enters the series having already raced in the Italian F4 championship. His two victories and a fourth place mean that he takes the early lead in the standings.

The next race in the championship will take place at Interlagos over the weekend of 29-31 July.
