Canada booked their place in the decider with Russia at the O2 Arena with a 2-0 win over hosts Czech Republic, whilst the Russians saw off the United States 4-0.

Czech Republic put Canada under pressure in the opening minutes of the contest but the star-studded Canadian team scored first and dominated the rest of the game.

Edmonton wing Taylor Hall opened the scoring after nine minutes when fellow Edmonton forward Jordan Eberle broke away and set him up in front of a gaping Czech goal.

Dallas wing Jason Spezza made it 2-0 on 30 minutes, while Arizona goalie Mike Smith stopped 23 shots to register his second shutout of this year’s worlds.

“We came here to have a chance to compete for the gold medal and now we have that,” Spezza told reporters.

“In the first five or ten minutes they got some shots and some chances but after that we settled down and we found our game,” added Hall.

Russia outshot the USA 35-30 in the day’s second last four encounter but it wasn’t until the 48th minute until the Europeans broke down the US defence with Sergei Mozyakin scoring with a wrist shot into the top left corner.

Washington star Alexander Ovechkin, who joined up with the squad on Thursday after the Capitals had been eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs, scored doubled their lead just two minutes later.

Vadim Shipachyov made it 3-0 on 56 minutes before Ovechkin set up Pittsburgh star Evgeni Malkin for Russia’s fourth.

“The first two periods were tough, they played a solid defensive zone, didn’t make mistakes,” said Ovechkin.

“When we scored goals it was much easier to play.”
