Somethings in the Air

Buenos Aires will host the South American Championships for the fourth time, 44 years after the last time it hosted the tournament. It will be the 47th edition of the athletics world’s oldest Area Championships.

Argentina will field a strong team led by German Lauro, the 2009 South American champion in Shot Put and Discus Throw, Juan Ignacio Cerra, the South American record holder in Hammer, and Jennifer Dahlgren. Cerra, 34, will be vying for the team’s ninth South American title.

The Brazilian delegation will be led by champions such as Maurren Maggi, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in Long Jump, Fabiana Murer, the 2010 Pole Vault World Indoor champion, and Keila Costa, the 2010 Long Jump World Indoor Championships bronze medalist.

Panamanians Irving Saladino, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the long jump, and Alonso Edward, the 2009 World Championships silver medalist in 200m, are also scheduled to compete.
