UK Championship – Ronnie O’Sullivan beats Judd Trump to win York crown

Ronnie O’Sullivan was relieved to lift the 2014 UK Championship crown on Sunday after clinching a dramatic 10-9 victory over Judd Trump.

Trump had reeled off five frames in a row in the York final to hit back from 9-4 down and level the match up at 9-9, only for O’Sullivan to hold his nerve in the decider, putting together a break of 51 to land the UK title for a fifth time.

The 39-year-old now has 15 Triple Crown triumphs to his name and moves up to third in the world rankings, behind Ding Junhui and Neil Robertson.

The Rocket also won the UK Championship in 1993, 1997, 2001 and 2007, but this triumph was arguably his best as he suffered an ankle injury just before the tournament began.

“I had the upper-hand for most of the match and I just lost a bit of concentration at 5-1,” O’Sullivan said.

“I went off the boil a bit and let him back to 5-3.

“From 9-4 up to 9-9, he’s not missed a ball really – he’s just knocked everything in and I didn’t get a chance.

“I felt really nervous after having such a big lead because you think, if I lose it from there, the disappointment would’ve been unbelievable.

“The pressure was just mounting and mounting and it’s difficult to put that out of your mind but in the last frame I managed to get a chance. The balls were nice and I had to just concentrate on hitting solid shots.”
