Arsenal and Liverpool’s pursuit of Nuri Sahin looks likely to continue through to next week after the midfielder’s agent was unable to work out a deal with Real Madrid.

Both clubs, along with Manchester United, have shown interest in Sahin for some time, and he has already been told he can leave the Bernabeu this season should he wish to find a new club.

Liverpool are seen as favourites to sign the Turkey international, but Arsenal are understood to have made a last minute attempt to hijack Brendan Rodgers’ move for the 23-year-old as Alex Song looks set to to follow Robin van Persie out of the exit door at Emirates Stadium.

According to Madrid-based daily Marca, Real Madrid want Sahin to join Liverpool on a season-long loan deal, even though the player would prefer to join the Gunners.

The former Borussia Dortmund player would prefer to join Arsenal so he can play in the Champions League this season, but Los Blancos coach Jose Mourinho is keen for him to join his friend Rodgers at Liverpool.

According to Saturday’s report, further talks between Sahin, his agent, and the Spanish giants are scheduled to take place in the next few days.

Liverpool had been hoping to complete a deal in time for Saturday’s Premier League opener against West Brom.

Bookmakers Sky Bet at time of writing make Liverpool the odds-on favourites to sign Sahin this month.
