Buendia goal leaves Burnley’s survival hopes hanging in the balance

Emii Buendia’s first goal since February 2021, ensured that the Premier League relegation race would go down to the very last match as Aston Villa and Burnley played out an entertaining 1-1 draw.

The draw saw Burnley move out of the relegation zone at the expense of Leeds. Both sides will head to the last match of the season level on points.

Buendia who was making a rare start for Aston Villa was a bundle of energy throughout the match. Despite his efforts to score or play his teammates in, the Argentine’s most critical first-half involvement was conceding a penalty.

Maxwell Cornet outfoxed Buendia in the box with the Argentine leaving a trailing leg that caught the Ivorian. A penalty was rightly awarded which Ashley Barnes easily converted.

Buendia would go on to make amends make right away, converting a crisp volleyed finish just minutes into the second half. Despite plenty of chances for either side, both defenses held firm and the game remained at 1-1.

Ahead of the final weekend of Premier League fixtures both teams face defining matches. Aston Villa have the chance to hand Liverpool the title by taking points off Manchester City, whilst Burnley knows they must better Leeds’ result against Brentford to stay in the division next season.
