Club Libertad Maintain Grip on Top Spot in the Paraguay Primera División

Published on

Club Libertad’s hopes of retaining their Paraguay Primera División Apertura title were improved after they extended their lead to four points at the summit of the standings with victory over Tacuary.

So dominant were Gumarelo that their goalkeeper, Martin Silva, didn’t have a single save to make as Libertad condemned their opponents to an eighth defeat of the campaign.

Patience was the order of the day for Daniel Garnero’s side, who had to wait until the stroke of half-time for their opening goal – William Mendieta notching his second goal of the season.

Tacuary came out of their shell more in the second period, but that only served to play into Libertad’s hands – Pablo Espinoza unluckily put the ball in his own net in the 77th minute, before Bautista Merlini added the third following an assist from Lorenzo Melgarejo.

It was Club Libertad’s fourth straight win, and they have now gone an incredible 360 minutes without conceding a goal.
