Despite ending Cruz Azul’s 24-year wait for a major trophy, Juan Reynoso has been replaced as head coach at the club by Diego Aguirre.
La Máquina made a solitary quarter-final appearance during the dual 2021/22 campaign, and that was enough to convince the club’s hierarchy to turn to a new figurehead to lead them into the Apertura ’22 term.
A winner of Copa Libertadores as a player with Peñarol, Aguirre has enjoyed a long coaching career at the helm of the likes of Atlético-MG, Internacional and San Lorenzo.
He’s a two-time winner of the Uruguayan Primera División as a head coach with Peñarol, and enjoyed some success with Al-Rayyan in Qatar.
But Cruz Azul fans may be concerned that this is Aguirre’s sixteenth different managerial appointment in just 20 years, with spells at Aucas, Montevideo Wanderers, Alianza Lima and São Paulo all lasting less than a year.
