Estadio Azteca Besieged by Demonstrators Over Planned Renovation Work

Published on

The national stadium of Mexico was besieged by protestors at the weekend who are furious at plans to renovate the venue and its surrounding areas.

The work on Estadio Azteca is vital to ensure that the 87,000 capacity arena meets FIFA regulations ahead of World Cup 2026, which Mexico will co-host with the USA and Canada.

But residents of Santa Úrsula Coapa are furious with the plans to change the landscape of where they live, and fear that the process will begin the long-feared privatization of drinking water in the area.

And so they met at the Colossus of Santa Úrsula to make their feelings known, and after marching to the stadium they placed a ceremonial seal on the statue outside of the home of Club América, Cruz Azul and the Mexican national team.

Officials plan to build new hotels, shopping malls and parking lots in the vicinity of Estadio Azteca, but the proposal has been rejected by the Old Ejido of Santa Úrsula Coapa neighbourhood group.
