The second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal between Real Madrid and Chelsea will go down as an epic.
Heading into the match at the Bernabeu, Madrid held a 3-1 lead after a dominant display at Stamford Bridge in the first leg.
Chelsea knowing, they needed goals started fast and netted early through Mason Mount’s brilliant finish. Chelsea was brought back to parity early in the second half with an excellent header by German defender Antonio Rudiger before fellow German Timo Werner bundled in a third.
With Madrid on the verge of a disastrous defeat, it was Brazilian Rodrygo who netted the all-important goal that sent the match to extra time. Latching onto Luka Modric’s superb pass, Rodrygo showed terrific composure as he stroked a side-foot volley into the net.
With the match poised to go either way, it was Madrid through Karim Benzema who netted the crucial winner, heading in a fine effort following some excellent work by Vinicius Junior.
Madrid will now play the winner of the Manchester City Atletico Madrid contest. Man City hold a slender 1-0 lead ahead of the second leg.
