What does the future hold for Lionel Messi?

We explore what might happen to Messi post-2023

Despite entering the twilight of his football career Lionel Messi is still the biggest name in world football.

It’s been a tricky time for Messi this season as the seven time Ballon d’Or winner has seemingly struggled to settle at his new club PSG. Dogged by bad form and injuries, something just hasn’t looked right.

With Messi struggling in France, rumours have been abundant regarding his future. Several recent reports have linked Messi with a return back to Barcelona but given the Catalan club’s financial issues it seems a return after just one season would be unlikely.

There have been several reports that clubs in the MLS still hold a real interest in signing the Argentine but whether Messi is ready for a move stateside remains to be seen.

Messi’s contract runs to 2023 and PSG wouldn’t want to willingly part with a player who brings in such large commercial revenues. However, with Messi not quite hitting the heights that were expected, if a bid was made, PSG would surely have to consider cashing in with the risk of the Parisian club losing Messi for free at the end of next season.
