League leaders Barcelona SC fall to second consecutive defeat

Published on

Barcelona SC lost their second league match in a row as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Gualaceo.

After losing to LDU Quito last time out, they can consider themselves lucky to still be in first place and are in danger of seeing their season fall apart after an unbeaten start.

Barcelona presented a team with many changes due to a busy schedule this week. This was the third defeat in six days for Jorge Célico’s team, having also lost in the Copa Sudamericana to Lanús. Célico blamed the latest defeat on the attitude of his players and especially pointed to the large number of matches played in one week.

The win for Gualaceo moved them away from the relegation places and into the top half of the league. The score that broke the deadlock was a tremendous shot outside the area from Uruguayan midfielder, Joaquín Vergés, in the 43rd minute.
