Speaking ahead of the game, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said he has belief in what he is doing at the club amid some poor results.

The Reds began the new Premier League season well with successive victories, but have been winless since.

They lost 0-3 against West Ham, struggled to a 1-1 draw with Norwich last week and, in midweek, drew with League Two Carlisle in the Capital One Cup only to go through on penalties.

It is a run of form that has led to speculation about Rodgers’ position at the club but he says he takes it in his stride.

“Every day you need to be at your best and when you come into here, into a club of this stature, that is always there,” he said.

“It doesn’t frighten me, I have an inherent belief in what I do.”

The Northern Irishman joined Liverpool in the summer of 2012 and almost guided the club to their first league title since 1990 during the 2013-14 season.

They were five points clear going into the final two weeks of the season but lost out to Manchester City and, having sold Luis Suarez they dropped down to sixth last term.

Badly needing a win against Villa to improve their inconsistent start this season, Rodgers appreciates that he is under some pressure, adding: “We’ve nearly achieved great things. We’re looking to mould players to take them forward.

“My belief is there but it always has been. But I don’t shy away from the fact that you need results and performances in order to stay in work.”
