Despite falling a goal behind, Deportivo Maldonado beat Plaza Colonia to maintain their lead at the top of the Liga Profesional de Primera División. The win means that they stay six points ahead of their nearest challengers Liverpool and Wanderers.
Maldonado found themselves a goal behind on 28 minutes when Plaza Colonia’s defender, Federico Barrandeguy scored a penalty. The game changed in favour of the league leaders when Nicolás Dibble was dismissed after 37 minutes.
Despite the one man advantage, Maldonado struggled to break down the defence of Colonia and it wasn’t until the 68th minute that they finally drew level through Diego Romero Lanz.
The goal appeared to give Maldonado more confidence and it didn’t take long for them to take the lead when Facundo Piriz scored in the 73rd minute. The team’s third goal came from forward Enzo Borges. It was his sixth goal in nine games and makes him the league’s top scorer.
