Man Utd favourites to sign FC Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes

Published on

Manchester United are favourites to win the race to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes this summer, according to bookmakers.

Valdes is out of contract at the end of next season and last week via his representatives said that the “irrevocable decision” had been made not to extend his stay at Camp Nou.

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has since confirmed that a new deal is now off the table.

The 31-year-old has in recent days been linked with a move to Liverpool as speculation about the long-term future of Pepe Reina continues, but United are believed to be keen on bringing in a new No. 1 to replace David De Gea in the summer, and according to The Times, Valdes has emerged as a possible target for Sir Alex Ferguson.

The development comes after reports in Spain suggested De Gea was being lined up by Barca as Valdes’ replacement.

It has been reported that De Gea is looking to return to his homeland, with Real Madrid said to be ready to offer him a route out of Manchester as they see him as a long-term replacement for Iker Casillas.

Although Sir Alex has in recent days defended De Gea following widespread criticism, bookmakers Sky Bet believe Valdes could be heading to Man Utd and make the Premier League leaders 3/1 favourites to sign Barca’s No. 1 before the end of the summer at time of writing, ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and Liverpool.
