SanSão Derby: Santos visit São Paulo looking to move top

Published on

This Monday, one of Brazil’s biggest local derbies takes place as Santos visit São Paulo. A win for the away side will move them top of the division.

The match is the final game of the weekend’s fourth round of games, and both teams will be looking to earn more than local pride. With the league season in its infancy and the league table looking very tight, both sides know how important a win could be for their upcoming games.

Both teams played in the Copa Sudamericana on Thursday and had differing results. São Paulo won 3-1 against Wilstermann on their visit to Bolivia and became Group D leaders with 3 consecutive wins.

Santos drew 1-1 against Chile’s La Calera and are in third place in Group C.

São Paulo’s key figure is Argentine striker Jonathan Calleri. He is the top scorer in Brasileiro with four goals so far.

In their last meeting, São Paulo won 3-0 in their visit to the Estadio Urbano Caldeira and has the overall lead in the derby with 136 wins, 30 more than Santos.
