Tigres to Be Punished for Fielding Nine Non-Mexican Players in Clausura Defeat to Atlas

Published on

After fielding an improper squad in their Liga MX Clausura semi-final defeat to Atlas, Tigres will be punished by the Mexican Soccer Federation.

Los Tigres have been fined an unspecified amount for fielding nine players not trained in Mexico, the competition rules allow for a maximum of eight.

According to Articles 48 and 49.7 of the Liga MX Competition Regulations, the breach means that Atlas will now be deemed to be the 2-0 winners.

Ultimately, that doesn’t mean a great deal as Los Rojinegros won the tie anyway, but there are implications for the goals scored by André-Pierre Gignac and Igor Lichnovsky on the night.

Those will be expunged from the records, meaning that Gignac’s hat-trick will no longer be classified in the history books. The upshot of that is that the Frenchman will now return to a tally of 26 goals. This means that he will slip back behind Alberto García Aspe on the list of all-time Liga MX scorers.
