Steve Bruce taking inspiration from Wigan Athletic ahead of FA Cup final clash with Arsenal

Hull City manager Steve Bruce has claimed that his side believe they can beat Arsenal in the FA Cup final and cites the example of Wigan Athletic’s shock win last season as proof that smaller teams can produce results on the big stage.

Wigan Athletic were completely written off ahead of last season’s FA Cup final with Premier League giants Manchester City but the Latics produced an outstanding performance to upset the odds and claim a 1-0 win over the Citizens.
This season it is Hull City who are regarded as the underdogs as they take on Arsenal at Wembley and Tigers manager Steve Bruce has claimed that his side have taken inspiration from Wigan’s win last year.

“It’s the mighty Arsenal with all their history, tradition, huge support and a huge club against the smaller club and the attraction is the ability of the smaller club to turn them over,” he said.

“We have to hope that we can do that and we have every belief that we can. That brings a little bit of the glamour back to the competition along with what Wigan did last year.

“Wigan’s win said to me that we had a chance. We were never going to win the Premier League, but I asked if we could win six games in the FA Cup. We’ve won five so far. Can we add the sixth? It would be terrific if we could.”

There is further hope for Hull in the fact that the last time that Arsenal went to Wembley as favourites for a cup final, against Birmingham City in 2011, they were beaten by the Blues thanks to a defensive mix up that allowed Obafemi Martins to score the winning goal in the 90th minute.
