In October 2020 Manchester United secured the free signing of Edinson Cavani on a two-year deal. The veteran Uruguayan had run his contract down at PSG following rumors of unhappiness with both Neymar and Kylian Mpabbe.
It was seen as an astute signing and to begin with Cavani seemed to be settling into life at his new club fine. The hitman scored ten goals in his first season with the club, and in his 26 appearances since he has led the line with aplomb.
However, with the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in last summer’s window, Cavani has seen his playing time this season significantly reduced. He has just made ten appearances all season, scoring two goals.
According to transfer supremo Fabrizio Romano, Cavani has made it clear to the United hierarchy that he has no intention of signing a new deal and will be leaving the club this summer.
Romano has stated that Cavani wants a new challenge and to try a completely new league most likely to be La Liga. Cavani’s availability will alert the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid who reportedly hold an interest.
South America could also be an option.
It remains to be seen where Cavani will ply his trade next season but it’s clear that wherever he ends up he still feels he has a lot to offer.
