Safina fails to defend a ton of points as she gets sent packing by Date-Krumm.
Kimiko Date-Krumm is through to her first second round of a Grand Slam since Wimbledon 1996 as she came back from down a set against Dinara Safina to win their first round 2010 French Open match 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Date-Krumm retired from tennis in 1996 and stayed there for a dozen years before returning to professional tennis in 2009. A former semifinalist at Roland Garros (1995), Date-Krumm had not enjoyed any Grand Slam success since returning from retirement although that changed today and she now has a reasonable draw that may see her through to the third round.
For Safina, the loss means she will not defend some 1400 ranking points as she was a finalist from a year ago. That means that when rankings are once again updated with French open results, Safina may be somewhere in the 17th to 20th range.
