Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka will meet in the third round of the ATP Madrid Masters in Spain and while Federer is favored he is not exactly a heavy favorite.  At present Coral have Federer priced at -250 (2/5) while Wawrinka is priced as a mirror image at +250 (5/2) with Boylesports (MAXIMUMBONUS referral code for either site).

The two players have met on tour 4 times and Federer leads the series 3-1.  However it is important to note that Wawrinka won their only head to head match on clay in straight sets at ATP Monte Carlo 2009.

Federer’s recent play has not looked great as he lost to both Ernests Gulbis in Rome and to Albert Montanes last week in Estoril. In his opening match from Madrid against Benjamin Becker, Federer was pushed to a second set tiebreaker and his form is not something to bet on at this point.

Wawrinka, on the other hand, has played several clay court tournaments with moderate success.  He won a 250 level clay court title outright in early April (d. Hanescu in the final) before contesting the more challenging tournaments.  In Monte Carlo Wawrinka beat Gulbis fairly easily before losing to Novak Djokovic and in Rome Wawrinka upset Robin Soderling before losing to Rafael Nadal.

Wawrinka has been playing solid and except for a recent loss to John Isner, it has taken an outstanding clay courter to take Wawrinka out of tournaments.  The same cannot be said about Federer.

Federer, the reigning French Open champion, is certainly an outstanding clay courter career-wise but if you bet this match you aren’t betting on Federer’s ghost from 2009, you’re betting on how Federer will play now.  He has not been playing well lately and he’s been a great player to bet against lately.

Due to that our recommendation is to back Wawrinka at +250 (5/2) keeping in mind that he has beaten Federer on clay before.
