MMA Update: Brazilians Vieira, Dos Santos Endure Contrasting Fates

Contrasting Fates for Dos Santos, Vieira

Brazilian gladiators Ketlen Vieira and Junior Dos Santos found themselves on different sides of the spectrum after their respective MMA matches over the weekend.

The 38-year old Dos Santos suffered an unfortunate injury against Yorgan De Castro in his Eagle FC debut, which ultimately resulted in a technical knockout loss.

Dos Santos, a former UFC heavyweight world champion, was winning the fight until he dislocated his shoulder in the third round after throwing a right hand.

It was the Brazilian’s fifth consecutive loss as he dropped to 21-10 (win-loss) while De Castro improved to 9-3.

While lady luck didn’t smile on Dos Santos, Vieira inched closer to a title shot with a 47-48, 48-47, 48-47 split decision victory over former champ Holly Holm in the UFC Fight Night Event on Saturday.

Holm dictated the fight, accumulating over 10 minutes of control time but Vieira managed to capitalize at range by forcing the former to close distance and landing powerful counter rights.

With the win, Vieira improved to 13-2 and 3-1 in her fast four fights, which also included a victory against another former title-holder in Miesha Tate last November.
