Serena Williams vs Julia Goerges 2nd Round Preview – 2010 Roland Garros

Published on

Serena Williams, when it comes to early rounds of Slams, is almost a perfect lock.  In the first two rounds of Slams dating back to her debut at the 1998 Australian Open, Williams has only ever lost one match and she is an incredible 82-1 in first and second round matches at Slams.

One could actually argue that Williams’ odds have value based on her track record however it’s best to stay clear of odds as short as -2000 and to take a peak at other markets.

Williams is priced at -450 (2/9) to beat Goerges in straight sets and that might look like a price to pound but really that line should probably be averted too.  Williams does NOT lose 2nd round Slam matches but she can lose sets and putting a hefty bet at -450 doesn’t seem like a great risk just to pick up some change.

Goerges has played well lately as she steamrolled Melinda Czink 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the French and she, Goerges, might not be a pushover in the second round for Williams.

Taking Serena to win 2-1 looks like a much smarter pick as it is priced at +400 (4/1).  Williams’ form hasn’t been great leading into the French Open and she might drop a set to a player like Goerges who has been playing reasonably well lately.  If Williams does drop a set and is having an off day, you would then fully expect her to will herself to victory as she just doesn’t take bad beats in Slams this early.
