Olivera and Filho Finish Fifth At Kusadasi

Olivera and Filho Finish Fifth At Kusadasi

It was hardly a storybook ending.

Brazilians Álvaro Filho and Evandro Oliveira finished last week’s Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Kusadasi Challenge in a four-way tie for fifth with the Grimalt brothers of Chile, and duos from Poland and Norway. Squads from Sweden, Australia, Germany, and Italy claimed first through fourth place respectively.

Filho and Oliveira turned in a mixed performance during the tournament. On the first day, they won a tight first match 21-18, 21-18 over France’s Youssef Krou and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat. The Brazilians then fell to the Grimalt brothers two sets to one (17-21, 21-19, 15-8).

The next day was more of the same. Filho and Oliveira defeated Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins of Latvia in straight sets in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, the Brazilians matched up against Sweden’s Jonatan Hellvig and David Åhman. The duos split two closely contested sets, but the Swedes were too much to handle in the third, winning 15-10.

The next Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Event will be held in Espinho, Portugal from July 14th-17th.
