Houston Astros beef up lineup, sign Cuban teenage pitcher Silvera

The Houston Astros are adding another Cuban to their lineup after signing teenage pitcher Fernando Silvera to a $17,500 deal.

Silvera agreed to a deal with the Astros on Tuesday but it only became official on Wednesday after he cleared all medical tests.

The 19-year-old Silvera became the first from his hometown to join a major league club and the 21st Cuban-born player in Houston’s system.

He is also the fifth Cuban player to ink a deal with the Astros during the current international signing period, joining the likes of Carlos Espinosa, Alberto Hernandez, Alejandro Núñez, and Kenny Gomez.

Silvera is among the top young Cuban pitchers in the world, throwing a four-pitch mix with a fastball around the 91-93 mph range. He has also registered a curveball that ranges from 76-78 mph, an 80 mph changeup and a powerful sinker.

The Buey Arriba native left Cuba in 2019 and will be assigned to the Astros’ Dominican Summer League squads.
