Canelo agrees to fight Golovkin this September

The much-anticipated rematch between Mexican boxing legend Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Russian gladiator Dmitry Bivol will have to wait.

This is after Alvarez announced on Monday that he will be taking on Gennadiy Golovkin for the third time this September 17.

Speaking to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, Alvarez, who is coming off a shock defeat to Bivol, said that his team is already finalizing the deal to fight with Golovkin.

“We already had that contract [with Gennadiy Golovkin], that agreement, so we have to continue what we started, and I think those are the two biggest fights in boxing. The fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez settled for a controversial split draw in his first bout with Golovkin before narrowly winning via majority decision in their rematch in 2018.

The third bout, which is scheduled for Mexican Independence Day weekend, will be contested at 168 pounds but the venue has yet to be finalized according to multiple sources.
