Brandon Rivera, a member of the Ineos Grenadiers UCI WorldTeam, has fractured and dislocated his elbow and dislocated his AC (shoulder) joint while training in his homeland of Columbia.
The incident took place on January 27, 2022.
This accident occurred only three days after fellow teammate and boyhood friend Egan Bernal suffered serious spinal and other injuries in the same area near Zipaquirá when he collided with the back of a parked public transport bus.
Local media reports stated that both cyclists were being treated at the Clínica Universidad de La Sabana, which is on the outskirts of Bogotá.
The 25-year-old Rivera is part of the team’s Columbian training camp and witnessed Bernal’s crash on January 24.
Noticias RCN, a local news outlet, reported that paramedics attended to Rivera at the roadside before he was transported to the hospital.
His compatriot was being treated in the intensive care unit.
The local broadcaster already had reporters covering the Bernal case when Rivera’s ambulance arrived at the clinic, followed by staff from the Ineos team.
Team officials confirmed the incident on social media in a statement reading: “Unfortunately, Brandon Rivera crashed while training in Colombia today and been taken to hospital. He’s suffered a fractured and dislocated elbow and has dislocated his AC joint. Get well soon, amigo.”
Apart from these two cyclists, the ill-starred Ineos pre-season training camp comprises riders Richard Carapaz, Daniel Martínez, Andrey Amador, Carlos Rodríguez and Omar Fraile.
As yet, there are no reports on the circumstances of Rivera’s accident.
A video taken a few days before these accidents revealed how dangerous the conditions were.
This footage showed a close call with an oncoming car overtaking other vehicles recklessly on the wrong side of the road.
