Phil Taylor sets sights on 17th World Championship title

16-time world champion Phil Taylor wants to add more World Championships to his name, starting with number 17 at the Alexandra Palace in London.

Taylor, who is preparing for the start of this year’s World Championships, which start later this month, first announced himself onto the darts world some 24 years, beating his former mentor Eric Bristow in 1990.

Since then, he has won another 15 world titles, but still has fond memories of that win over Bristow.

“That is still my favourite, the first one,” Taylor told Sky Sports.

“But then the last one, my 16th was special because everyone was writing me off. I thought to myself, ‘wow, perhaps this isn’t the end’. But it isn’t the end. I put that right.

“The Worlds is what you are after. It is the one that everybody wants. The atmosphere is brilliant. It is Christmas and everyone is in a brilliant mood.”

Taylor last won the title at the Alexandra Palace in 2013, beating Michael van Gerwen in a thrilling final. However, the Dutchman won his first world title last year, winning 7-4 in the final, beating Peter Wright.

Taylor lost in the second round, beaten 4-3 by Michael Smith and will want to put that right this time out. He starts off his PDC World Championship campaign against Jyhan Artut, a German player who has never been past the second round.

Van Gerwen starts his title defence against Englishman Joe Cullen.

The tournament begins on December 18th, with the final set to take place on January 4th.
