Formula One has announced that the Singapore Grand Prix will continue to be held at the Marina Bay Street Circuit for another seven years.
This will mean that the race will now continue up to and including the 2028 season.
The race first appeared on the calendar in 2008 and quickly established itself as a fan favorite, so the news is sure to be met with positivity.
It was the first street race to be held in Asia and became the first event in Formula One history to be held at night.
Although the race has not been run for the last two years due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, it is set for a comeback this year, with the race scheduled for October 2, 2022.
The extension therefore shows the sport’s continued commitment to Singapore and will be a major boost for the country.
The agreement was reached following discussions between Singapore GP Pte Ltd (SGP), the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and Formula One.
Stefano Domenicali, the Formula One president and CEO, said: “I am delighted that Formula One will continue to race in Singapore for another seven years.”
He went on to say that the extension will help with the sport’s growth in Asia.
“The Marina Bay Street Circuit hosted the first night race in F1 history in 2008, and Singapore has continued to thrill fans, teams, and drivers ever since.
“Singapore holds a special place on the F1 calendar, and this extension is part of our long-term commitment to continue to grow the sport in Asia.”
With Formula One’s commitment to be net zero carbon by 2030, it was also announced that the race organizers were going to be working closely with the country’s tourism board to try to reduce the carbon footprint of the race and make it more sustainable going forward.
