Williams fined after breaching F1’s cost cap regulation

The Williams F1 team have been fined $25,000 after they breached Formula 1’s cost cap regulations.

Williams became the first team to be punished under the new rules after they missed the 31 March 2022 deadline to submit their 2021 account details.

The FIA stated that Williams confirmed ahead of time that there would be a delay with their report. The team were then subsequently made aware of the “procedural breach” and cooperated with the FIA to rectify this.

The cost cap was introduced last year to limit the spending of each F1 team over a calendar year. The current cap for 2022 is $140m, a reduction of $5m from the previous year.

The plan for 2023 is to reduce the amount to $135m but there have been calls from some teams to reconsider the amount due to inflation levels. Others believe that changing the budget could set a bad precedent at a time when the sport is keen to reduce costs.
