Two teams in the thick of things in the National League meet on Sunday at 1:10pm ET.
The Atlanta Braves need to get back to their winning ways soon as they are just 4-6 in their last 10 games. That lapse has allowed Philadelphia to climb back into the race in the NL East as the Phillies are now just 3.5 games back of the leading Braves. The Florida Marlins are also looming as they are just 6.5 games back and perhaps they have proven themselves a little bit in the last two days as they have taken two games off of San Diego in at Petco Park.
The Braves will face Cincinnati in Cincy on Sunday in a game that starts just after 1pm ET.
The pitching matchup will feature Tommy Hanson for the Braves against Edinson Volquez for the Reds, two right handers – neither of them dominant. Atlanta are the slightly better team against right handed pitching but it’s so close between the Braves and Reds in that category that you wouldn’t really consider it a scale tipper.
What you could look at is Volquez and the poor job he has done in limited innings pitched this year. In three starts he has accrued just 12 innings pitched and he has given up 11 earned runs. You have to think that he might be on a tight leash in his start against the Braves on Sunday and Atlanta have the edge on the mound, at least in the early going.
But the starting pitching is just one dimension and another is the home and away splits. The Braves are on the road where they are just 25-31 this year. Measure that against Cincinnati’s 32-23 record at home and +104 (26/25; bet365) on the Reds starts to look alright even despite Volquez being such a question mark out there.
