The San Francisco Giants defeated the New York Mets by 9-3 on Wednesday. Evan Longoria blasted two home runs, and Joc Pederson hit his fourth home run in two games. In the first two innings alone, the Giants recorded four homers off rookie Thomas Szapucki.
Besides Longoria and Pederson, Mike Yastrzemski also hit a solo home run off Szapucki, who made his first start after the Mets called him up from the minors due to a string of injuries.

The match against the Giants was the Mets’ second loss in a series after winning their first 14 series of the season. New York lost two of their three games in San Francisco.
The New York Mets’ previous 14-game wins were the third-longest streak in the history of the league, trailing only the 1934 New York Giants (16) and the 1911 Philadelphia Athletics (15).
The Mets also suffered their first two-game losing streak since April 10-11. ON Tuesday, the Mets came back from an early 8-2 setback to take leads of 11-8 and 12-11 before going down 13-12. In their previous 181 games in which they scored 12 runs or more, the Mets had never lost a game.
“That’s a playoff team right there,” Longoria said “I think we’re all happy with the result.”

Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, and Tylor Megill have all been out with injuries this season. In 1 1/3 innings, Szapucki gave up nine runs, seven hits, and three walks, giving him a season ERA of 60.75 and a career ERA of 27.00. When he last pitched in the major league on June 30, he gave up six runs and seven hits in three and a third innings in a 20-2 loss against Atlanta. Szapucki only threw 23 strikes out of 49 pitches.
After Chris Bassitt’s poor performance on Tuesday, Mets pitchers allowed eight runs in consecutive games for the fourth time after Jonathan Niese and Bartolo Colon in 2015, Dillon Gee and Niese in 2011, and Rick Reed, Al Leiter, and Bobby J. Jones in 1999.
Following his catch of Donovan Walton’s third-inning fly, Mets left fielder Jeff McNeil slid face-first into the low railing in the left-field foul zone. McNeil was taken out of the game in the fourth inning after injuring his left knee.
“Precautionary,” McNesaid of his removal. “Feel good. Ready to go on Friday.”
With his first two home runs of the season, Longoria racked up four RBI, despite having a limited season due to a right-hand injury. He gave the Giants the lead with a three-run home run in the first inning. Then in the second inning, he followed Yastrzemski with the Giants’ second back-to-back home run of the season, which increased their advantage to 9-0.
Wilmer Flores, a former Met, gave the Giants an RBI double in the second inning.
Jakob Junis (2-1) allowed two runs and three hits in six innings while throwing out just 16 times among 86 pitches. Fransisco Lindor scored a double and one home run off Junis. Lindor was 20 for 39 (.513) against him with six home runs. Darin Ruf of San Francisco had four strikeouts, all of which occurred in the game’s first six innings.
