Budapest well on track to meet 2023 World Championships targets

Published on

Budapest, the host city of the 2023 World Athletics Championships, has received some positive feedback from World Athletics. A delegation from the organisation paid a visit to Hungary to scope out the planning and progress made by the city, primarily the new athletics stadium.

The new stadium in Budapest is set to be completed in March 2023, well ahead of the World Athletics Championships, scheduled for August 18th – 27th. The stadium, part of a large regeneration project in the city, will see some pilot-event action before the big Championships arrive.

The new venue will host three events before the Worlds, including the Gyulai István Memorial Athletics Hungarian Grand Prix.

Environmentally conscious plans

As part of the Budapest plans for its vision for hosting the 2023 World Athletics Championships, the focus is on renewable energy and sustainability at the games and beyond.

Meeting the World Athletics’ Sustainability Strategy is an opportunity not only for Budapest but for Hungary as a country, to continue to educate and to create a lasting legacy. The city will also join the World Athletics’ Air Quality project.

Budapest strives for long-term inspiration

An example of the longevity and sustainability of the project is the Sports and Leisure Park that families and schools will be able to use along with the world’s elite athletes. All visitors to the park can enjoy the space before, during, and after the World Championships.

As part of the World Athletics delegation that visited Budapest, CEO Jon Ridgeon highly praised the facility and commended Budapest for its vision of inspiring future generations through its sustainability projects. “We believe that athletics is the most accessible and barrier-free sport, making it easy for everyone to participate in it.”
