Atlas and Tigres Advance to Liga MX Clausura Semi-Finals with Nervy Victories

Atlas and Tigres will join Club América and Pachuca in the semi-finals of Liga MX Clausura – but they were made to work hard for their victories by Chivas and Cruz Azul.

Atlas, the 2021 Apertura champions, held a one-goal advantage over their Guadalajara-based opponents from the first leg of their quarter-final clash, and they looked to be on easy street when Anibal Chala found the net in first-half injury time in the second leg at Estadio Jalisco.

But Chivas were not going to give up that easily, and when the hosts’ Angel Marquez was sent off after 68 minutes the door to the last four became slightly ajar. The visitors found the net through José Macías late on, but Atlas clung on to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory.

As for Tigres, a 0-1 defeat in their second leg against Cruz Azul ensured that they, just about, booked their spot in the semi-finals too – despite a red card for Javier Aquino at Estadio Universitario.
