Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho swooped to sign Papy Djilobodji from Nantes on transfer deadline day on a four-year deal to try and shore up his side’s leaky defence.

Mourinho has witnessed the Blues concede nine goals in their opening four matches which has left them floundering in 13th position in the Premier League table – eight points behind early leaders Manchester City – on four points.

He had been chasing the signature of Everton defender John Stones, but failed with bids of up to £30million to try and lure the England international to Stamford Bridge from Goodison Park.

As a result the Portuguese coach switched his sights to other targets and has brought in 26-year-old Senegal international Djilobodji, who was in the final year of his contract with the French Ligue 1 outfit having made 183 appearances for them in five years.

“I’m very happy to sign for a big club like Chelsea and I want to do my best to help the team win titles. I want to thank the club for giving me this opportunity,” he said.
Chelsea also completed the £4million signing of Reading’s highly-rated 23-year-old stopper Michael Hector on Tuesday, but failed in an ambitious bid to snap up 21-year-old Brazilian Marquinhos from Paris Saint-Germain.
