Despite Luis Diaz Strike, Liverpool’s Title Hopes Dealt a Major Blow

Diaz goal not enough for Liverpool

Despite Liverpool forward Luis Diaz’s strike, Liverpool could only manage a draw against top four hopefuls Tottenham in a pulsating 1-1 draw.

In a game which both sides needed to win to maintain their respective title and Champions League aspirations, both sides had to settle for a point which now means both sides’ destinies now lie outside of their control.

The pattern for the match was established early with Liverpool dominating the ball but struggling to break down a stubborn defense. Tottenham always looked a threat on the counter and it was through their superb skill on the break that they were able to break the deadlock.

In just a few swift passes the ball ended up with Harry Kane outside of the Liverpool box who shifted it to fullback Ryan Sessegnon who squared it for Son Heung Min to tap in his twentieth goal of the season.

Not to be deterred, Liverpool kept pushing for the equalizer and it arrived ten minutes later when the superb Diaz cut inside and hit a shot that was deflected into the net via the boot of Uruguayan Rodrigo Bentancur.

Despite their best efforts, a winner never came.

Liverpool’s misery was further compounded when Man City beat Newcastle 5-0 to stretch their lead at the top of the table to three points.
