Maradona World Cup ’86 Shirt to Sell for $8 Million

The shirt worn by Diego Maradona in Argentina’s famous World Cup ’86 win over England – the ‘Hand of God’ game – is set to sell for $8 million at auction.

But Argentine football officials want the jersey to be proudly displayed in the country, and they have sent a delegation – thought to include members of Maradona’s family – to plead with its owner, former England midfielder Steve Hodge, to sell it to them instead.

Hodge swapped shirts with Maradona at the end of that quarter-final match, in which the diminutive playmaker also notched the amazing solo goal that has been crowned one of the finest in World Cup history.

“It should be in Argentina in order all Argentines can enjoy it, and not for a millionaire to display it in his closet,” a representative of the delegation commented.

The shirt has been on display in the National Football Museum in Manchester, England for the past 20 years, but is now at an online auction with Sotheby’s.
