FIFA U-Turn Over Peruvian Officials Ban

Manuel Burga Ban Overturned | CrunchSports.com

Why Peruvian official’s ban was overturned

FIFA has overturned a life ban imposed on a South American football official who was acquitted of a racketeering conspiracy charge in the United States and ordered a new inquiry. The Court of Arbitration for Sport stated its panel of judges upheld part of Manuel Burga’s complaint against FIFA for a violation of due process rights.

According to the court, Burga’s 2019 football suspension has been overturned, and the matter has been remanded to the FIFA Investigatory Chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee, which will have to restart the process.

Burga was the president of Peru’s football federation when he was accused of receiving bribes by American federal investigators in a wide-ranging investigation revealed in 2015. According to FIFA investigators, Burga received or was promised $6.6 million in bribery tied to marketing arrangements for championships, including the Copa America and Copa Libertadores.
