Liga MX and German Bundesliga Strike Historic ‘Agreement of Understanding’ Deal

Liga MX is set to benefit from a first-of-its-kind ‘Agreement of Understanding’ with the German Bundesliga that will see the two competitions join forces in ‘collaborating, generating initiatives, sharing experiences and exchanging information in sports, business and marketing fields.’

While the actual specifics are not clear, Liga MX chief Mikel Arriola believes the deal will help Mexican clubs learn from their German counterparts in areas such as technology and innovation, marketing, business management and fan engagement.

“Reaching this agreement is a big step in the internationalization plan of Liga MX that seeks to position itself beyond Mexico and the United States, always prioritizing professionalization, sports growth, innovation, the construction of better administrative structures and, of course, the training of young players,” he said.

There will be a concern that Liga MX will become something of a talent farm for Bundesliga clubs, in much the same way the MLS has in recent years. The likes of Alphonso Davies, Chris Richards and Ricardo Pepi have all swapped North America for Europe, so will Mexico’s finest young talents now make their way to Germany too?
