Match Preview
It’s two wins out of two for the Red Devils in pre-season and 10 goals scored, four of them by Wayne Rooney, suggesting he will have no problems adapting to the different football philosophy deployed by the Dutchman.

This is a second consecutive game against high-quality Italian opposition, with United having won 3-2 against Roma on their debut in this pre-season American tournament, despite hanging on at the end after taking a 3-0 lead towards the end of the first half.

Van Gaal was unhappy at the performance, bemoaning the way his team’s better passers had given the ball away, while reserve goalkeeper Ben Amos did himself no favours by conceding a 60-yard strike from Miralem Pjanic after straying off his line.

But at least it was another win, this time against the second best team in Serie A last season, with Rooney scoring twice and also providing a sublime pass for Juan Mata to open his pre-season goalscoring account.

Now United go up against Inter in DC and specifically their former captain Nemanja Vidic, who left for Milan in the summer on a free transfer after eight years at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal is set to stick with a 3-5-2 formation and has confirmed that Wilfried Zaha will play some part in the game. Whether Luke Shaw, who the 62-year-old has said is not fit enough, starts remains to be seen.

Whoever wins will put themselves in great shape to reach the final in Miami on August 4th, with United topping the group table after the first round of matches on the maximum three points available.

Inter are on two points after they beat Real Madrid on penalties, with the European champions therefore on one point and Roma yet to get off the mark.

It finished 1-1 between Inter and Real in San Francisco with Gareth Bale scoring a superb opener from outside the area before Mauro Icardi equalised from the penalty spot after a foul on Vidic.

In the shootout at the end of 90 minutes, Icardi was the spot-kick hero again as his strike won it for Inter after Real had missed three of their attempts.

If United can reproduce their best form of this tour so far, they can gain a third victory – and there is every chance the extremely high standards demanded by their new manager will evoke an improved display from their disappointing second half of the Roma game.
