Premier League: Arsenal and Tottenham’s top-four race heats up

Arsenal’s hopes of playing in the Champions League next season were dashed by a resounding 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Antonio Conte’s men currently sit in fourth and final Champions League position, thanks in part to a resounding 5-1 win against Newcastle on Sunday.

A five-point buffer in fifth and a game against Tottenham place the Blues in a strong position to avoid a catastrophic end to a tumultuous campaign.

David Moyes’ squad abjectly failed to qualify for the Champions League at the end of last year.

The Gunners have a game in hand over their rivals, but having games to spare doesn’t mean they will pick up the points.

With Chelsea, Manchester United, West Ham and Spurs all destined to have their seasons defined in 23 days, Wenger believes there is a good chance that Arsenal will return to some competition featuring the best European clubs for the first time since the days of his management.

Bruno Labba’s men will need at least six wins from their remaining seven games to avoid losing out as well, including fixtures against Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.
