Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid continued their incredible dominance in wheelchair doubles, as they secured their ninth consecutive Grand Slam title win at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Their winning run stretches all the way back to 2019, when they were beaten by Joachim Gérard and Stefan Olsson in the final of Wimbledon.
Ever since, the British duo have blown away all before them in the biggest events on the wheelchair tennis calendar, to secure their historic run of nine titles in a row.
Hewett raring to go in 2022
Adding to the intrigue around Hewett and Reid’s quest for a ninth consecutive Grand Slam title was the developing story surrounding Hewitt and the ITF’s ruling on his wheelchair tennis status.
The 24-year-old from Norwich had previously been told that he would no longer be eligible to compete as he was not considered disabled enough, but a dramatic U-turn by tennis’s governing body saw him able to go again in 2022.
With both men missing out in the singles (Reid in the last eight and Hewett in the final), they teamed up brilliantly in the doubles, holding their nerve in a match tie-break in the final to overcome Gustavo Fernández and Shingo Kunieda.
How many Grand Slam titles can they win?
The dominance enjoyed by Hewett and Reid has been incredible in recent seasons, with their nine consecutive titles being added to the four that the pair had won previously.
Currently sat on 13 Grand Slam doubles titles between them, they have etched their place into tennis folklore, with the key question being, how many more can they win?
The French Open at Roland-Garros in May is the next opportunity for Hewett and Reid to add to their collection, and with Wimbledon and the US Open to follow, they look to have plenty more major titles in them yet.
