Serena Williams is concentrating on making a full recovery from her elbow injury after confirming that she will not be involved in the Bank Of The West Classic at Stanford.
The world number one, who has won the tournament on three previous occasions – in 2011, 2012 and 2014 – would have been the top seed. She said in a statement: “I’m disappointed to have to withdraw from Stanford, but I need to get my elbow back to 100 per cent.

“The tournament is one of my favourites and the fans have always been so generous and supportive of me. I wish all of the players much success and I hope to return next year.”

Meanwhile, Jelena Jankovic sealed a 7-6 6-0 triumph against the number five seed Duan Ying-Ying at the Jiangxi Women’s Tennis Open.

“I am always so happy after I win any match, but today was very special,” former world number one Jankovic said afterwards.

“It’s really nice to enjoy the game, and I can do that when my fans are there at the side.”
