Andy Murray to face Nick Kyrgios in US Open opener

The 2015 US Open starts on Monday, and Andy Murray’s bid for a second New York title will begin against Australian Nick Kyrgios.

Murray has faced and defeated the world number 27 ranked Kyrgios already this year at the Australian and French Open.

On both occasions, the British number one triumphed in straight sets but the he will be wary of the threat the Aussie can pose when he is in the mood.

Kyrgios tends to bring a full on sideshow when he plays on the big stage, picking up a fine earlier this month for an “insulting remark” made to Stan Wawrinka.

Top seed Novak Djokovic takes on Joao Souza of Brazil in his New York opener, while Roger Federer begins his quest for US Open number six against world number 33 Leonardo Mayer.

Rafael Nadal faces Croatian teenager Borna Coric in the first round, 18-year-old Coric having won their only previous meeting.

With Nadal’s slip down the rankings, he is now a lurking danger at the quarter-final stage for the world’s top three and this time around it would be Djokovic that meets the Spaniard should they progress to the last-eight.

Murray could face Wawrinka in the last eight, while he is scheduled to meet Federer in the semi-final once more, following his emphatic loss to the Swiss at Wimbledon.

The men’s defending champion Marin Cilic will face a qualifier when he starts out in round one.
